Description of Brittany Spaniels

Brittany Spaniels are medium sized dogs. They are quite agile and quick. They typically way between 30 and 40 pounds. They are long-legged. In color they are typically orange and white or liver and white. As can be seen from the picture above, they are have a short hair coat though feathering does occur off the front and hind legs. Normally, their tails are docked at a young age leaving just a few inches.

Temperament of Brittany Spaniels

Brittany Spaniels are high energy dogs, especially when outside the home. They have a very loving way about them and they are great with children and can get along with other pets. They require minimal grooming unless you want to show them. They are easy to train though often distractible. They do remain puppies for quite awhile and even at the age of four, our Brittany still has the excitement and antics of a puppy. They are very social and want to be with you as much as possible. They require a lot of exercise to stay happy. They are also major food thiefs. They are smart dogs and love to have toys and items that keep them engaged.

Things to Consider Before Getting a Brittany Spaniel

Brittany Spaniels are wonderful family dogs. However, there are some things to consider before buying one.

• Because of their high energy level, they do require a lot of exercise to stay happy. Otherwise, they can become naughty and destructive.
• Brittany Spaniels, while requiring a minimum of grooming, do shed and get bedraggled looking. If you have any desire to show your dog, you will want to make sure to go to a groomer who knows how to groom a Brittany.
• They can be real food thiefs so make sure that you don't leave the Thanksgiving turkey unattended for long.
• They sniff everything. I mention this one because it is important to realize that hunting dogs use their noses a lot more than other breeds. This was something that I never considered before moving from a toy breed and a herding breed to a hunting breed.
• Purebreds can be quite expensive so make sure to do your research. You should have medical proof of their bloodline concerning hip and eye disorders.

I would recommend the very loving and happy Brittany to an individual who is willing to take the time to train, exercise, and work with their dog each day. This dog, overall, is a great family dog.
